Cala Minnola - Levanzo: immersion between history and nature
One of the most fascinating archaeological backdrops in the Mediterranean
Cala Minnola is one of the most striking and surprising stops on Levanzo, the wildest island of the Egadi Islands. Located on the southeastern coast, this cove combines crystal clear sea, unspoiled nature and an important underwater archaeological site.
Here, a few meters from the shore, a Roman shipwreck with intact amphorae lies on the seabed, visible even with a simple snorkeling mask. A unique place where history and the sea come together, ideal for those who enjoy light diving or want to experience a different excursion than usual.
How to get to Cala Minnola
The best way to visit Cala Minnola is with a boat or dinghy tour around Levanzo. Tours often include a stop here, just because of the uniqueness of the underwater site and the beauty of the cove.
Alternatively, you can also reach it on foot from Cala Dogana in about 30 minutes of scenic walking. The trail passes through stretches of Mediterranean scrubland overlooking the sea and ends in a shady pine forest overlooking the cove.
Immersion between history and marine biodiversity
The real star of Cala Minnola is its seabed. At a depth of about 10 meters, there are the remains of a cargo of Roman amphorae from the 1st century B.C., probably belonging to a trading ship that sank near the cove.
The amphorae are clearly visible due to the clarity of the water and represent a rare example of underwater archaeology that can be visited even by non-divers. Moving around the relics are small fish, starfish and local marine flora.
It is one of the best areas for cultural snorkeling: an experience that combines the beauty of the sea with the discovery of the past.
